Vygotsky s View On The Way Children Learn And How...

Ann’s year 5 Science classes are an example of how elements of both Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories are applied in a classroom setting. There are several elements of the lesson plan that reflect Vygotsky’s view on the way children learn and how information is delivered. Group work and the social nature of learning is one example of how Ann’s lessons are a reflection of Vygotsky’s theory. Ann’s lessons also introduce the idea of the zone of proximal development and learning from a more knowledgeable other. The scenario also reflects Piaget’s theory about the stages of development. The majority of a year five class, according to Piaget’s cognitive stages (Duchesne McMaugh, 2016) would be in the concrete operational stage (Huitt Hummel 2003). At this stage of a child’s development, they begin to be able to think more logically and become more aware of other peoples ideas. This means that by splitting her class into groups, Anne is developing the main features of the Concert operational stage. One way the uses of group work in the class could be improved is through the sharing of information with the smaller groups and then with the whole class. By using tasks such as a group presentation or a poster on the topic of study, the individual groups are able to share the information they have gathered in order to gain an even broader understanding of the topics.
